M: Oh, it was great! Actually, I spent most of my time teaching in a summer school.

M: No. I was a volunteer teacher in the school. The school provided me with accommodation and meals but didn’t pay me anything.

Mary’s Doll

Mary loved dolls but never had one. Every time she asked her mom to buy her a doll, she was rejected, because her mom had to raise three kids and was nearly able to make a living. The day before her birthday, Mary tried to persuade her mom again, and said, “All my friends have their own dolls.” She really wanted to have one, but her mom didn’t say a word, which made Mary very upset. At midnight, Mary slept into her mom’s bedroom. She quickly put her hand into her mom’s purse, took out some money, put it in a secret place and went back to sleep again. The next morning, Mary woke up in excitement, because she was going to buy herself a doll. But at breakfast, she saw on the table a nice doll dressed in beautiful clothes. “Happy birthday, Mary. This is a doll I made for you,” her mother said to her happily. Knowing her mom had been working on it for two weeks, Mary felt ashamed that she shouldn’t have taken the money. In tears, she told her mom the truth and promised she would not do such a thing again.
